The wines we love

Whether you stroll down to the nearest winery, or take a short drive, there are a number of excellent wines to put to the test in and around Caux. We start off with these three, and encourage – no, we urge! – you to make sure you sample the work of their hands and take home a few bottles to enjoy during your stay at South to South. You will probably want to pack a few bottles in your luggage to share with friends and family who weren't fortunate enough to experience this trip with you – that is, if there's any left at the end of your stay ;-)

Domaine Paul Mas

We fell in love with the wines of this estate that comes with a long history and heaps of passion.

We are still new to the area, but we're told that the range that bears the name of the domaine's founder, Jean-Claude Mas, reflects true Languedoc character. What we know for sure is that it's very fine wine that we enjoyed with food and without.

According to the estate's website, the range  is a fusion between the tradition of winemaking and the new approach to wine, embodied by Jean-Claude Mas, who is often described as a pioneer from the New Languedoc, on a mission to give the region back its former glory. (Apparently wine production in the region goes back more than 2000 years.)

Browse their website for the full picture, where you're bound to find something for every taste on the planet, and be sure to visit their fabulous restaurant or wine bar.

Our bold winter favourite: Reserve Syrah

Domaine Chartreuse de Mougères

One of the nicest tasting experiences is to be had at this charming estate, located between Caux and Pézenas.

The vineyard of Domaine Chartreuse de Mougères covers an area of about 5 ha and extends around a stunningly beautiful monastery, established way back in 1328 by the Dominican Fathers.

We're told that the upper part of the vineyard, forms a plateau classified AOC Languedoc, with an area of bout 20 ha. This is where traditional grape varieties such as syrah, grenache noir and mourvèdre flourish. The terroir is made up of of quartz pebbles and gravelly clays, giving winemaker, Nicolas' fine reds those delicious spice flavours. Head over to their website for more into.

Pop in for his fabulous wines, and for an array of products and crafts produced by the silent nuns from the fraternity of Bethlehem.

We love, love, love: Clos de l'Abbaye red

Domaine de L’Arjolle

This beautiful domaine was started in 1974 by brothers, Prosper and Louis-Marie Teisserenc, and still stands tall on the initial pillars of quality, diversity and the production of delicious wines.

According to their website, a trip to California saw Louis-Marie fall in love with Zinfandel. He came back to plant one hectare in the commune of Pouzolles. “This is where the atypical Z de l'Arjolle was born, the first wine made from the unique Zinfandel grape variety in France.”

Today the domaine’s family has grown to include sons and daugthers of the original winemakers who make red, white and rosé wines that are modern, authentic, diverse, and always unique!

L’Arjolle has a gorgeous tasting room where you meet the winemakers, learn about the history and processes, and taste the work of their hands.

“L’Arjolle has more than fourteen different varieties of vines, all planted after a precise soil study in order to adapt each grape variety to the best terroir. This diversity of grape varieties is an infinite source of blending and an infinite source of tasting.”

This is probably one of the best tasting experiences you’ll have, so be sure to check it out.

Look out for this one: Equinox Cabernet Syrah 2020
