The food we love
Don’t underestimate our little village’s restaurant offering – it may be limited, but it’s good (and getting better!). The surrounding villages, nearby Pézenas, and not too far afield offer a wide variety of great eateries that cater to all tastes and budgets. Here are a few of our favourites (not necessarily in order of preference). If you come across a gem of a place, please let us know so that we can include it here for other South to South visitors to enjoy.
Les Valseuses, Caux
Les Valseuses (which translates as The Waltzers) was formerly known as Le Baliverne. Under new ownership and with Chef Eric at the helm, the space has undergone a quirky, playful makeover. We eventually had an opportunity to have a meal there recently and oh, boy, was it so worth it! The food is fresh and wholesome and delicious.
Two of us had steak with chimichurri sauce on potato puree, and one of us had tuna with hummus and veg (photo above). Everything was packed to the brim with flavour and we all ate to the very last morsel. They have a good wine list, even though we enjoyed our food so much we hardly came up for air, never mind wine!
The nice thing is, it’s a very, very short stroll down the road from South to South, so you can indulge in that extra glass of wine – and if you do a little walkabout after dinner, there’s certainly room for dessert, too.

Côté Mas, Montagnac
Travel a bit further to Motagnac to the wine estate of Cote Mas and enjoy a magnificent lunch or dinner at their elegant restaurant.
Making exclusive use of seasonal and preferably organic produce from the area, the tasting dinner menu is a feast of delights, with the option of four, five or six delicious dishes. A sommelier is on hand to recommend the perfect wine for each dish.
If you don't want the set menu, there is a la carte menu to choose from with offerings that will satisfy the most sophisticated palate.
If you want something lighter for lunch, check out the Wine Bar where you can sample the wines and the chef's specialities.
Remember to reserve your table as Côté Mas is popular among wine and food lovers.

La Maman des Poissons, Pezenas
Excellent food and the best service from the delightful owners. Do yourself a favour and go. Every dish we had was perfect.
If you’re tapas junkies, like we are, you will find La Maman des Poissons’ menu hard to resist. Small plates of deliciousness that can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, washed down with great wine in a lively, fun atmosphere.
The great thing about tapas is that it’s meant to be shared, so we ordered a variety that we loved so much we had to order a second round. There was no way we could single out one, so go ahead and try as many as you can.
Every dish is super fresh, well thought out and beautifully presented. These are small explosions of flavour you’ll crave for long afterwards.
As far as I know they’re only open in the evening from Thursday to Sunday, but it may be different in season.
