The food we love
Don’t underestimate our little village’s restaurant offering – it may be limited, but it’s good (and getting better!). The surrounding villages, nearby Pézenas, and not too far afield offer a wide variety of great eateries that cater to all tastes and budgets. Here are a few of our favourites (not necessarily in order of preference). If you come across a gem of a place, please let us know so that we can include it here for other South to South visitors to enjoy.
MDL Le Bistrot, Caux
We went for dinner at this very stylish restaurant in our humble little village and were super impressed with everything about it.
The interior is gorgeous and makes for a welcoming, and cosy atmosphere.
Two of us had the cocktail of the evening, which was a very good choice indeed. No idea what it’s called, but it had rum, pineapple juice, pear juice, and cream of hazelnut (yup, never knew that was a thing). All together, it made for a drink that is decidedly more-ish.
We all shared a tapas-style starter (see photo above). Every item was delicious, especially those little skewers! For mains, the two men in our party shared a 600g veal dish and chips (there wasn’t a morsel left, so it was obviously very good), and the two women each had sea trout with melt-in-the-mouth mushrooms. It was finger-licking good.
Only one of us had dessert, and she raved about it.
They have an à la carte menu, as well as a plate of the day (which was lasagne on this occasion). At the time of writing, their daily special comprised a starter plus main course plus cheese or dessert for all of 29 euros, which is pretty amazing. The menu is seasonal, so you can be assured of fresh products all year round.
The service is attentive and faultless (and in English, as a bonus!). Suffice to way, we’ll be back for sure!
Quoting from their website: MDL le bistrot was born from Matthieu de Lauzun's desire to share his love for traditional French family cuisine in all simplicity. Thus making his childish soul resonate once again by immersing himself in the family moments of Sunday meals. It is also the desire to offer loyal customers but also new customers a new facet of the culinary world of Lauzun.
”It is therefore a resolutely family, friendly and beneficial atmosphere that Marie-Laure & Matthieu de Lauzun wish to share... all with pretty bottles from here and elsewhere and a dynamic and welcoming team.”

La Maman des Poissons, Pezenas
Excellent food and the best service from the delightful owners. Do yourself a favour and go. Every dish we had was perfect.
If you’re tapas junkies, like we are, you will find La Maman des Poissons’ menu hard to resist. Small plates of deliciousness that can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, washed down with great wine in a lively, fun atmosphere.
The great thing about tapas is that it’s meant to be shared, so we ordered a variety that we loved so much we had to order a second round. There was no way we could single out one, so go ahead and try as many as you can.
Every dish is super fresh, well thought out and beautifully presented. These are small explosions of flavour you’ll crave for long afterwards.
As far as I know they’re only open in the evening from Thursday to Sunday, but it may be different in season.
